SPEEDWATCH
Speedwatch Training was carried out on Saturday 28th January 2023 - 6 people attended. In addition 4 other volunteers have received on-site training. 1 new volunteer has signed up.
Speedwatch has now begun taking place in the Village. The data from the Vehicle Activated Sign (VAS) is used as a guide when arranging sessions which usually last for 1 hour.
VAS SIGN
The data for January and February has been downloaded from the VAS sign (see below). Past reports have shown that 1 in 3 vehicles are exceeding the 30mph limit - this is still the case even though visibility of the sign has improved with the leaves off the trees - tree pruning is planned which should make a difference .

31-35 mph = 8,203 (22.76%)
36-40 mph = 2,551 (7.08%)
41-45 mph = 643 (1.78%)

56-60 mph = 4 (0.01%)

36-40 mph = 3,235 (7.3%)

56-60 mph = 6 (0.013%)

No particular days were busier than others
More vehicles were speeding between 07:00 and 22:00 hours, with the highest number between 07:00 and 10:00 hours
and between 16:00 and 19:00 hours.
What is Community Speed Watch?
The Community Speed Watch (CSW) initiative allows members of the community to address the issue of speeding by becoming actively involved in road safety, monitoring speeds at safe locations with speed detection equipment.
The aim of the CSW initiative is to address the problem of speeding through a partnership of the police, the local community, parish councils and other partners.
The aim of the initiative is NOT to catch as many speeding drivers as possible.
It is to reduce speed in areas of concern, make drivers aware that excessive speed is socially unacceptable, educate drivers about the dangers of speeding and address concerns from local residents about cars speeding through their neighbourhoods.
Police forces across the country implementing Community Speed Watch can show a reduction in overall average speeds and a significant reduction in drivers travelling well above the speed limit.The information above is an extract from from the Community Speed Watch leaflet available here.
1st March 2024: Unfortunately, the Barnham Community Speed Watch Team is no longer active because we don't have a co-ordinator. However, the Speed Indicator Sign will remain and continue to record speeds through the village which will be reported at parish council meetings.
